It was originally settled as Calhoun, Illinois, after Senator John C. When it was named to the county seat, the name Calhoun fell out of favor with the people (mainly due to the fact that the Senator himself fell out of favor with the people), and the town was renamed Springfield. Today the city is still considered to be a small town, despite the number of people and the importance it plays in state politics.
