While you may not believe it at first, Phoenix is the only state capital with a population of over 1 million people. The only one. It\’s also the largest city in the Mountain Time Zone and the second largest city in the Western United States after Los Angeles, California, and it acts as Arizona\’s cultural, economic and financial center.
The land that is currently Phoenix was once occupied by the Hohokam tribe, who (around 1,000 years ago) settled in the area and began building settlements. They build canals, which made the desert arable, and also served as a basis for the current canals that occupy the city. During the 1300-1450’s there were several periods of severe drought, which led the Hohokam to abandon the area. Afterwards, Spanish settlers passed through the area, some settling down in what is now downtown Phoenix, and later on Mountain Men came through while searching for beaver and otter pelts (among other things). During the American Civil War, the greater Phoenix area (including much of the Salt River Valley) was held in contention by the two warring factions, although the area did not experience much conflict as it was not militarily important.
Phoenix proper was founded by a man named Jack Swilling, who, while passing through the area in 1867, saw huge potential for farming, his inspiration being Fort McDowell and how well its citizens were carrying along. He found the ancient Hohokam canal ruins, and set about building his new city. It continued to grow and build until Phoenix was incorporated in 1881, and has continued to grow ever since.
Phoenix has a very arid climate, and as such it has incredibly hot summers and mild winters, with summer temperatures reaching as high as 107 degrees, while winter temperatures typically panning out in the low-to-mid 70\’s. Rainfall isn\’t as common, and throughout the year it’s typical for the city to receive around 8 inches or so, with March being the wettest season at just over 1 inch for the month, and June the driest, with only .09 inches.
The city proper is divided up into fifteen separate “urban villages,” much like New York City and its five boroughs (although incredibly smaller in size). They are: Ahwatukee Foothills, Alhambra, Camelback East, Central City, Deer Valley, Desert View, Encanto, Estrella, Laveen, Maryvale, North Gateway, North Mountain, Paradise Valley, South Mountain and Rio Vista. Rio Vista was newly created in 2004, and as such is still scarcely populated, with more urban villages planned to border Rio Vista coming soon.
