Behind Bridgeport and Hartford, and its core population lies at 124,000 as of the 2006 census. When the city was first founded in 1638 (making it one of the oldest cities in New England), eight streets were laid out in a four-by-four grid, which is now known as the “Nine-Square Plan”), and is actually a National Historic Planning Landmark.
The city was founded in 1638, and the plans were laid out shortly afterwards. The name was changed to New Haven in 1640, and it was originally Quinnipiac, after the local Native American tribe who had lived there prior to European settlement (they actually sold the land to the settlers in exchange for protection. The New Haven settlement was actually considered its own colony and not part of the greater Connecticut colony and the main reason is the fact that the New Haven colony was an intolerant theocracy that did not allow other churches to be erected in its borders. However, the two separate colonies, under pressure from England, joined together, and they became just the one Connecticut colony afterwards. New Haven boomed during the Civil War, mainly due to increased production of weapons and armaments, and the influx of factory jobs that this brought. During the two world wars, the city continued to increase, and the downtown region in particular is in the midst of a massive urban renewal project. It is also the birthplace of President George W. Bush.
The city\’s economy was heavily based on manufacturing, but after the end of the Second World War the industry in the city (and in the rest of New England) crumbled, costing many people their jobs. Areas with high working-class populations fell into disrepair, and during the 70’s and 80’s were known for high crime and drug use. However, urban renewal projects throughout the city, as well as more service-oriented jobs, have cleaned up the city, and it is now a haven for many, many people.
