It currently is the state\’s second largest city (with a population of just over 124,000). However, the Greater Hartford Metro Area is the largest metro area in the state of Connecticut, and is ranked 45th in total population in the United States, just eclipsing 1.18 million people. The city’s unofficial nickname is the “Insurance Capital of the World”, due to the high volume of insurance companies that are headquartered there, and it has overtaken New Orleans as the wealthiest city in the United States.
The city was first settled in 1659, and was originally named Stratford. Its reliance on fishing and farming marked it as a typical New England town, and it remained as such for quite some time. The city is proud to say that Abraham Lincoln visited, and the site where he spoke to the citizens of the city was packed, both inside and out. It survived the Civil War unscathed and continued to grow into a much more manufacturing-based city both during and after the war, often supplying Union troops with weapons and ammunition built in their own factories.
Since the late 19th century, Hartford was known for attracting many different types of people due to its many manufacturing jobs. Irish, Spanish, Italian, German, Dutch and many different people from all walks of life would come to Hartford to seek out a new life in the factories of the city. However, as the city grew into the latter half of the 20th century, problems began to plague it, and in 1978 a 19-day teaching strike shut down the public school system and nearly derailed it. However, the city has since been on the rebound, and with new and expensive houses and new real estate going up, the city is truly in the middle of a massive urban renewal project.
The city is a typical New England city, with high temperatures in the summer and incredibly low temperatures during the winter. Highs in the summer range between the high 80’s and low 90’s, while in the winter the temperature rarely gets above freezing. However, the city is known for its beautiful winter snowfalls, and is a wonderful place for a winter vacation.
