D.C. is a great place to live or visit. Whether you’re touring the White House or planning to move, it’s rich in history, culture and nature, believe it or not. Read on to see what auto transport or auto shipping to D.C. has to offer.
When needing an auto transport service, here are some things you might want to know before heading down there:
Washington, D.C., home of the nation’s capital. It houses the White House, Capitol Building, and Supreme Court, and is bordered by Virginia to the west and Maryland to the north, east and south. It was actually planned in the late 1700′s, and its construction is mandated in the United States Constitution.
It was named after George Washington, and the name “Columbia” is an homage to Christopher Columbus. The centers of all three branches of the United States Government are all located in D.C., as well as being the headquarters for the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, and the Smithsonian Institution, to name a few.
D.C. is actually governed by a single municipal government; i.e. it has its own elected mayor, although until 1871 Congress had supreme authority over the city and its subsequent district. Now, however, it is a single entity, and even has its own Congressman, albeit a non-voting one.
Population-wise, D.C. has roughly 590,000 people, and the Washington Metro Area is the eighth-largest metropolitan area in the U.S. with more than five million residents in total; if D.C. were deemed a state, it would rank dead last (behind Rhode Island), second-to-last in population (in front of Wyoming), and first in population density (surprisingly, ahead of New York City).
Washington, D.C. was cut out of two separate but adjacent counties, one in Virginia and one in Maryland. A portion from each state was organized as a separate county. Alexandria County, on the south bank of the Potomac River, was given but then retro-ceded (given back) to Virginia in the 1800′s, and is now its own separate city and county (Alexandria and Arlington, respectively). On the Maryland side, Washington County was given up, and construction on the capitol was started when it was deemed unnecessary because of the amalgamation of these different cities and counties. By the turn of the 19th century, the plan was abolished, and the city was built from scratch.
Washington, D.C. was actually razed to the ground by British forces during the War of 1812, in retaliation to the burning of York (modern-day Toronto) by U.S. forces. Luckily, James Madison and the U.S. army stationed there fled before the British arrived and saved the government from almost certain destruction. However, although most of the city was burned, the house of the Commandant of the Marine Corps (located at the Marine Barracks), was spared, as a sign of respect. This home is now the oldest public building”in continuous use a E”in the nation’s capital.
In addition to being the home of the U.S. government, it’s also home to many native birds and natural areas, located within the district itself. It’s home to the U.S. National Arboretum, Rock Creek Park, the Smithsonian National Zoological Park, and the C&O Canal. If you’re a nature fan, D.C. is a great place to choose when deciding where to transport your auto.
If you’re a fan of news, D.C. has you covered. It’s home to The Washington Post, its oldest and most-read daily newspaper, and it has E”throughout its history E”developed into one of the most reliable and reputable newspapers in the United States. It’s most famous for its coverage (and exposure) of the Watergate scandal, an event uncovered by Bob Woodward and his associate, which exposed Richard Nixon’s CREEP campaign and its attempt to steal sensitive documents from the Democratic Party. It’s also home to The Washington Times, a conservative daily paper, and the tabloid Washington Examiner, which debuted in 2005 and covers entertainment news, much like the national tabloids.
