It was incorporated in 1872 as Youngstown, Alabama, which was named for the founder of the city, James Young. The railroad came to the town in 1873, which caused a small boom at the time. The city was renamed by the turn of the 20th century and was taken after the president of the railroad company that first came to the city; he was also a Confederate general who fought at the battle of Gettysburg.
