Pocatello is the largest city and the county seat of Bannock County in the southeastern portion of the state of Idaho. In 1834, Nathaniel Jarvis Wyeth, a United States fur trader, founded Fort Hall on the site of what is now Pocatello, which started out as a trading post. The discovery of gold in late 1860 brought many new settlers to the region, trying to get rich quick, and its population stayed fairly consistent until the 1960\’s, where it absorbed its neighboring city Alameda and became, for a time, the largest city in Idaho.
Like most cities in Idaho, Pocatello boasts hot summers and cooler winters. Average temperatures in the summertime peak at about 87 degrees in the midst of July, and fall during the winter months to around 40, although this tends to get lower in December and January. Average lows in the summer hover around 48 degrees, while in the winter they drop to well below freezing, and snow is relatively common in the area.
