During the Civil War, it served as the capital of the Confederate States of America before it was changed to Richmond, VA, in 1861. After the reconstruction of the city in the early 20th century, segregation was made more and more apparent. Starting in street cars, then spreading like wildfire, Mobile was known (along with Birmingham) as one of the most racially divided cities in the United States. However, that did not stop the city from helping the war effort in the Second World War: the city produced freighters, destroyers and minesweepers for the US Navy far faster than the Nazis could sink them, and the population (and economy) boomed during the war.
After the war, segregation ended, and Mobile once again worked on city beautification efforts until the 1960 closing of its largest airfield, which sent the city into another economic depression, but was lifted during the 1980’s with the ‘String of Pearls’ initiative, which made the city an urban powerhouse in the southeast US.
Mobile, like the rest of Alabama, is cool in the winter (but not cold) and can become incredibly hot during the summer time. Average highs in December are around 40 degrees, while in July they can reach upwards of 90 degrees. The city is often bypassed by major hurricanes, usually only being hit by the ‘tail end’ of it, resulting in strong winds and rain, but no major damage.
